THE DAMENCHOR

The Saengerrunde Damenchor was organized in 1959, with 24 members, in honor of the 80th Anniversary of the Austin Saengerrunde. Its primary purpose is to promote interest in the preservation of the German Song through its annual Christmas concert and participation in the Annual German Texan Saengerfest.

Regular singing rehearsals are held on Monday evenings except for summer months. Two general business meetings are held each year. Funds are raised by selling refreshments and crafts at annual Saengerrunde Maifest and Oktoberfest, and through a nominal dues structure. The annual Damenchor Christmas concert is open to the public as a gift to the community. Additionally, the choir participates in hosting Saengerfests, and singing at churches, schools, retirement homes, and ethnic festivals.

The Damenchor provides an opportunity for ladies who are interested in singing and learning more about the German language and traditions. Current membership of the Austin Saengerrunde Damenchor is about 40 members, some originally from Germany, some born in the United States with German heritage, and some who just enjoy this group for the singing and the Gemuetlichkeit! Members do not necessarily have to know music or German, since the director and members assist them with this. Our organization has a lot of fun promoting German heritage and singing German songs.
